For the first time ever I’m visiting Hilton Head Island, SC. Midweek, there’s no one here and I’m fortunate to have the place mostly to myself. Or at least that’s how I feel. I sat down to write this poem this morning, minutes after taking an endless stream of photos of the sunrise. And boy, am I glad I did. That’s definitely a sight I don’t get to see every day, and thankfully I didn’t miss it.
just in time
ringing fills my ears
foggy sleep fading
wake up, wake up
right now, not in
five minutes or ten
or two, this here is
the moment
eyes sticky still
with dreams, sleep
stumbling through
gray early light
pulling back a veil
curtains opening
revealing the sky
simply on fire
dawn slowly burning
the sun unleashing
a raw red power
opening it’s eye
turning it’s gaze upon
the brand new day
scorching clouds
setting seas ablaze.
one minute more
a second further along
spent asleep, dreaming
it would be done
finished without me
the greatest show
on earth, over
