FRESH OFF THE PAGE: just in time

For the first time ever I’m visiting Hilton Head Island, SC. Midweek, there’s no one here and I’m fortunate to have the place mostly to myself. Or at least that’s how I feel. I sat down to write this poem this morning, minutes after taking an endless stream of photos of the sunrise. And boy, am I glad I did. That’s definitely a sight I don’t get to see every day, and thankfully I didn’t miss it.

just in time

ringing fills my ears
foggy sleep fading
wake up, wake up
right now, not in
five minutes or ten
or two, this here is
the moment

eyes sticky still
with dreams, sleep
stumbling through
gray early light
pulling back a veil
curtains opening
revealing the sky
simply on fire

dawn slowly burning
the sun unleashing
a raw red power
opening it’s eye
turning it’s gaze upon
the brand new day
scorching clouds
setting seas ablaze.

one minute more
a second further along
spent asleep, dreaming
it would be done
finished without me
the greatest show
on earth, over

I've never really liked labels: I am this, I am that... But in the interest of introducing myself to the world, I can say that I am many things: nurse, writer, photographer, poet, painter, gardener, friend, armchair philosopher, counselor, nature lover, real-estate aficionado, movie buff, sometime yogi, and aspiring world-traveler. I think that's a pretty good list... for now. I want to become a bigger part of the vital, creative force I feel deeply at work in the world and connect with other people who want to do the same.
